Heavy Structure Gel is ideal for creating larger ripples, tumbling and ‘confused or angry’ water.

The beauty of Heavy Structure Gel is that it will not ‘slump’ – it will stay where it is put instead of spreading out as a varnish might do.

ADDING PLANTS

Surface-borne water plants such as water lilies or broad-leafed pond weed can either be painted on or cut out of paper and stuck on. Where the smaller scales are concerned, cutting out the lily pads might prove problematical, so they are best painted on. It is far better to add these after all the paintwork is dry.

Marginal plants such as bulrush, iris or reeds can be glued on after the top coat of varnish has dried; the making of these plants is covered in Chapter 3. As they are fairly tall plants, they must be supported in some way. This can be achieved by drilling holes in the acrylic sheet in readiness for planting. A group of these holes will allow quite a realistic planting of the reeds.

These are pushed though the sheet and down to the bed of the feature. The finish of the water is clear so it might be possible to see right down to the mud. It is not necessary to push all of the reeds to the full depth just the outer ones in the group – I always think this is a nice touch.
